Home Renovation Checklist: 15 Things to Plan Before You Start

Renovations go wrong when decisions are made on site instead of on paper. Use this checklist before you start to save time, money and stress.

Before you begin

1. Define the goal. Refresh, repair or full remodel? Write it down.
2. Set a budget with a 10% buffer. Older homes often reveal hidden issues.
3. Check society rules. Working hours, debris disposal and lift usage.
4. Get a site inspection. Look for seepage, cracks, old wiring and plumbing.
5. Finalise the layout. Moving walls, sinks or toilets changes cost dramatically.

Services & infrastructure

6. Rewire if your wiring is over 15 years old. Plan points for AC, geyser, chimney, TV and chargers.
7. Replace old GI plumbing with CPVC/UPVC.
8. Waterproof every wet area before tiling, and do a flood test.
9. Plan internet and CCTV cabling while walls are open.

Finishes & interiors

10. Choose flooring early — it affects door heights and skirting.
11. Order long-lead items like imported tiles and modular kitchens first.
12. Finalise lighting and ceiling together.
13. Pick paint after furniture and fabrics, not before.

Handover

14. Do a snag walk with a written list: shutters, tiles, switches, taps, paint.
15. Collect warranties and product manuals for every appliance and fitting.
