L-Shaped vs U-Shaped vs Parallel Kitchen: Which Layout Suits Your Home?
10 July 2026 · 5 min read · By Livvouge Design Team
The layout of your kitchen decides how much you walk, how much you can store and how many people can cook together. Here's how the common layouts compare.
L-shaped kitchen
Best for: most 2BHK and 3BHK apartments. Two adjoining walls form an efficient work triangle and leave the rest open. Use a corner carousel or magic corner to make the corner usable.
U-shaped kitchen
Best for: larger kitchens and families who cook a lot. Three walls of counters give maximum storage. Keep at least 4 ft between opposite counters so two people can work.
Parallel (galley) kitchen
Best for: long, narrow kitchens. One side for cooking, one for washing and prep. Very efficient, and often the only option in apartments with a utility at the end.
Straight kitchen
Best for: studios, 1BHKs and open-plan homes. Everything on one wall — add a tall unit for extra storage.
Island kitchen
Best for: villas and large open kitchens. The island adds prep space, storage and casual seating, but needs at least 3.5 ft of clearance on all sides.
