The board used inside your cabinets decides how long they last. Here's a clear comparison of the four materials you'll hear about when planning a modular kitchen or wardrobe.
Quick comparison
| Material | Water resistance | Strength / screw holding | Relative cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BWP plywood | Excellent | Excellent | ₹₹₹ | Sink unit, kitchen base, bathrooms |
| MR plywood | Moderate | Very good | ₹₹ | Wardrobes, bedroom furniture |
| HDHMR | Very good | Very good | ₹₹ | Kitchen units, wardrobes, TV units |
| MDF | Low | Moderate | ₹ | Dry areas, CNC-cut panels, decor |
BWP plywood
Boiling Water Proof plywood is made from hardwood veneers bonded with phenolic resin. It handles moisture better than anything else, which makes it the safest choice for the sink unit and any furniture in wet areas.
MR plywood
Moisture Resistant plywood works well indoors where there's no direct water contact — wardrobes, beds and study units.
HDHMR (High Density High Moisture Resistant board)
HDHMR is an engineered board made from compressed wood fibres. It is dense, flat, termite-resistant and handles humidity well. It's a great value alternative to plywood for most kitchen and wardrobe carcasses and is easy to machine for handle-less designs.
MDF
Medium Density Fibreboard is smooth and great for painted or CNC-carved panels, but it swells if it gets wet. Use it only for dry, decorative applications.
Our recommendation
- Kitchen sink unit: BWP plywood.
- Other kitchen units: BWP plywood or HDHMR.
- Wardrobes: HDHMR or MR plywood.
- Decor panels & CNC jaali: MDF.
Whatever board you choose, edge-banding quality and hardware matter just as much. Ask your designer what brand of board, laminate and hinges is being quoted.
FAQs
Is HDHMR better than plywood?
HDHMR is denser and more uniform than plywood and resists moisture well, but BWP plywood remains the best choice for areas with direct water exposure like the sink unit.
Can MDF be used for kitchen cabinets?
MDF is not recommended for kitchen carcasses because it swells with moisture. It is best used for dry decorative panels.
